Turnpike overpass

This photo tour takes us along Commonwealth Avenue from just west of the Boston University Bridge to Kenmore Square, and back. We look east along Commonwealth Avenue. The Boston University Bridge is to the left, Essex Street to the right. The stripe across the bottom is the stop line before the intersection. Because two right-turn destinations follow closely -- one in the foreground and one just over the hump -- there are two lanes here from which traffic turns right. I am waiting on my bicycle in the most favorable location to continue straight ahead. The bicyclist on the right is running the red light and headed for the bike lane, which right-turning motorists wil cross. The diagonal stripe in this photo is an expansion joint over an overpass for the Massachusetts Turnpike extension. A political complication with improving this intersection is that it is owned by the Turnpike, though the intersection only serves surface streets.
